Review of Coursera Blockchain Specialization Course offered by University of Buffalo

The University of Buffalo is covered by Bina Ramamurthy and has a 4.6 rating with around 201,376 enrolled (this is arguably among the best in Coursera Blockchain Specialization). This course covers the introduction to Blockchain Specialization initially exploring the Bitcoin protocol followed by the Ethereum protocol. Bina is a teaching professor at the Computer Science and Engineering Department.


This is done jointly by the University of Buffalo and the State University of New York (both reasonably reputed in their respective fields)
The entire course can be completed in 16 hours spread across 4 weeks.

Week 1 covers definition of Blockchain, Week 2 covers the Ethereum Blockchain. Week 3 covers Algorithms and Techniques and the final week 4 covers the Trust Essentials. There are total over 4 quizes with 21 questions in total.

This is a course that was recorded in 2018. One note is that you would have to install the Ethereum Virtual Machine (the environment setup takes a little bit of hands on). Hyperledger is taught in this course module and solidity is introduced. This is a good starting point for free Blockchain Certification as a developer.

The course has financial aid for a limited set of people. The subtitles are available in Arabic, French, Portuguese (European), Italian, Vietnamese, Korean, German, Russian, English, Spanish. The course is 1 out of 4 in the Blockchain Specializations. The prerequisite is knowledge of atleast one high level programming language.

Review of Coursera Blockchain Specialization Course offered by Princeton University

This is conducted by Arvind Narayanan, who is an Associate professor at the Princeton University (Computer Science). He is also an IIT-Madras alumni (my alma mater) and University of Texas Austin alumni!

The entire course can be completed in 21 hours spread across 11 weeks. Week 1 covers introduction to Crypto and Cryptocurrencies.

Week 2 covers how bitcoin achieves decentralization.


Week 3 covers the mechanics of bitcoin. Week 4 covers how to store and use bitcoins.
Week 5 is about the all important Bitcoin Mining.
Week 6 encapsulates Bitcoin & anonymity.


Week 7 is about community, politics and regulation.
Week 8 is about alternative mining puzzles.


Week 9 is bitcoin as a platform.
Week 10 is about Altcoins and the Cryptocurrency Ecosystem and the final week 11 is about the future of bitcoin?

There is only one quiz.. The programming assignments are difficult (presuming you are a beginner in programming).

One note is that you would have to install the Ethereum Virtual Machine (the environment setup takes a little bit of hands on).

Review of Coursera Blockchain Revolution Certification Course offered by Insead

This is conducted by Don Tapscott & Alex Tapscott who are Adjunct Professor and Instructor at Insead respectively. The professors are also globally recognized and the authors of the best selling book Blockchain Revolution. Insead is one of the best business schools in the world & certainly the top ranked in Europe. The course has 1980 ratings and 4.7 stars! This is a beginner level course that introduces Blockchain - explaining the foundation and why it is revolutionary!

Students also get access to the ground breaking research at Blockchain Research Institute as well as the Blockchain Commons.
This is part of a 4 course specialization. Students are also required to do an applied learning project. The 4 courses are
a) Introduction to Blockchain Technologies
b) Transacting on the Blockchain
c) Blockchain and the Business: Applications and Implications
d) Blockchain Opportunity Analysis.
